Power of Attorney in Turkey — Translation and Notarisation Guide

Updated April 2025

A power of attorney (vekaletname) allows you to authorise someone to act on your behalf for legal, financial or property matters. Whether you need to grant authority in Turkey from abroad, use a foreign power of attorney in Turkey, or send a Turkish power of attorney to another country — each scenario has specific document requirements.

Scenario 1 — You are abroad, need to act in Turkey

If you cannot travel to Turkey to complete a transaction — property purchase, company registration, court proceedings or inheritance — you can grant power of attorney to a representative in Turkey.

1

Option A — Turkish consulate (fastest)

Visit the Turkish consulate in your country. Consulates have notarial authority and issue powers of attorney directly in Turkish. This document is valid in Turkey without any additional steps — no apostille, no translation needed. Bring your passport and know what powers you want to grant.

2

Option B — Local notary + apostille + translation

If consulate access is difficult, a local notary in your country can draft the power of attorney. It must then be apostilled (or consulate-legalised for non-Hague countries) and accompanied by a certified Turkish translation. Send the documents to Turkey by courier — we can receive and process them from our Ankara office.

Scenario 2 — You have a foreign power of attorney to use in Turkey

A power of attorney issued abroad must meet Turkish requirements before it can be used here:

Source country What's needed
Hague countries (Germany, UK, US etc.)Apostille + certified Turkish translation
RussiaRussian consulate in Turkey legalisation + certified Turkish translation
UAE, Saudi ArabiaRelevant consulate in Turkey legalisation + certified Turkish translation
Turkish consulate-issuedNo further steps — directly valid in Turkey

Scenario 3 — Turkish power of attorney to be used abroad

A Turkish notarised power of attorney needs additional steps to be valid in another country:

1

Apostille (for Hague Convention countries)

The Turkish notarised document is apostilled by the relevant governorship (kaymakamlık or valilik). This takes 1-2 business days. The apostilled document is then valid in Germany, the UK, France, Spain and all other Hague member states without further legalisation.

2

Translation in the destination country

Once apostilled, the power of attorney may need to be translated into the local language by a sworn translator in the destination country. For Germany: sworn German translator. For France: sworn French translator. We can handle Turkish-to-German, Turkish-to-English and Turkish-to-French translations.

3

MFA + Embassy (for non-Hague countries)

For Russia, UAE, Saudi Arabia and similar countries: the Turkish notarised document goes through Ministry of Foreign Affairs approval, then the relevant embassy in Ankara for legalisation. We manage this entire chain from our office.
